Medical report links Avandia to 43% increased risk of heart attack & 64% increase in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

A medical study first published in the New England Journal of Medicine has linked the prescription drug Avandia and related products Avandamet and Avandaryl to increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious side effects including death.

On May 21, 2007, the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Safety Alert regarding the popular diabetes drug Avandia. The FDA alert followed a study released on the same day, and published in the June 14, 2007 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, that linked Avandia with significant increases in risk of heart attack, stroke, and even death from cardiac events. The study titled "Effect of Rosiglitazone on the Risk of Myocardial Infarction and Death from Cardiovascular Causes" evaluated forty-two separate studies comparing patients using Avandia (rosiglitazone) to patients who were not using Avandia. The study concluded that patients taking Avandia (rosiglitazone) face a 43% increased risk of heart attack, and a 64% increased risk of dying from heart related cardiovascular disease, such as congestive heart failure, heart attacks, congestive heart failure and strokes.
