Kansas City man pleads guilty to identity theft and $300,000 social security fraud

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (USDOJ) – Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man pleaded guilty in federal court today to stealing the identity of his deceased brother as part of a scheme to commit Social Security fraud.

Joe Calvin Seward, 66, of Kansas City, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Ortrie D. Smith to aggravated identity theft and mail fraud. The total fraud loss incurred by the United States as a result of Seward’s scheme is $300,419.

Seward admitted that he used the identity of Lee Seward, his dead brother, to conceal his work activity and income, which allowed him to receive Social Security disability payments in his own name.

A 29-Year Employee at the SSA in San Jose Unlawfully Created and Distributed Social Security Cards

SAN JOSE, California (FBI) - Rachel Ochoa pleaded guilty in federal court in San Jose on Monday to unlawfully producing Social Security cards, United States Attorney Melinda Haag announced.

In pleading guilty, Ms. Ochoa admitted to issuing Social Security numbers and cards to more than 25 individuals she knew did not have a legal right to obtain them.

According to the plea agreement, Ms. Ochoa worked at the Social Security Administration’s San Jose Office for 29 years. Ms. Ochoa was employed as a claims development clerk. As part of her job duties, Ms. Ochoa was responsible for processing and issuing new Social Security numbers and cards.
